Slovenia is a small Central European country, measuring just over 20,000 square kilometres. It is one of the smallest countries in the world, even smaller than Switzerland, Belgium and, for example, South Carolina in the US. What are the most convenient means of transportation in Slovenia?

Throughout the year, this small country between the Alps and the Mediterranean has a lot to offer. Many tourists and visitors from nearby countries enjoy family-friendly ski resorts and many thermal resorts in winter, exploring the countryside and medieval cities in spring and fall, and cooling in the Mediterranean Sea or high in the Alps in the summer. What means of transport can we use to explore (in the simplest way) Slovenia?

Bus

One of the most popular means of transportation in Slovenia is definitely the bus. Many city and suburban lines provide good coverage throughout the seasons and throughout most of the day. At night, only a few buses run, mostly on international routes.

Due to the small size of the country, bus travel is relatively reliable, affordable and cheap.

If you choose a bus for your trip, always check the timetable carefully, especially the return timetable. On some lines, buses run frequently, on others they do not. It may be that the bus will not run at all over the weekend, ie on Saturday or Sunday.

Aeroplane

There are three international and numerous local, smaller airports in Slovenia. Despite the fact that Slovenes are one of the world’s top in terms of a number of aircraft per 100,000 inhabitants, moving within Slovenia by aircraft is not particularly widespread except for tourist purposes (panoramic flights). By plane, you will usually only arrive in Slovenia and use any of the other means of transport within it.

Personal car

Travelling through Slovenia is the fastest and most comfortable by car. The country is small and the road links great. The motorway cross-connects Italy, Austria and Hungary with one of the arms, Austria and Croatia with the other. To travel on the highways, the vehicle must have a vignette.

Slovenians are big fans of cars. We can cross the whole country in about three hours, most destinations are only a good hour away. There are many car rental providers available to tourists. The Slovenian cities, including the capital Ljubljana, are small. They do not have a metro, but mostly bus public transport combined with a train. In Ljubljana, a combination of city bus and train is popular. The distance from one end of the city to the other, which is about 15 to 20 km, is overcome by train in minutes.

Ship

The port of Koper is one of the largest ports on the Adriatic coast and an important window into the world. Within Slovenia, there are some smaller passenger routes between the coastal towns of Piran, Izola, Koper and Ankaran, which are mostly limited to the summer season, when there are thousands of tourists in the region.

Inland travel with ships is not interesting in Slovenia.

Helicopter

Helicopter travel is only exceptionally useful in Slovenia. There are some private helicopters that will take you to most tourist destinations. Nevertheless, a helicopter is not a commonly used means of transport in Slovenia.

In addition to the helicopters used by members of the army, police and ambulance, there are some private helicopters in Slovenia that tourists can spot in particular in the Alps. They are used there for the carriage of goods and, exceptionally, for the carriage of persons.

Bike, electric scooter

To overcome short distances (up to 20 km), the locals use their bicycle, electric scooter or go on foot. Moving with such vehicles is not only environmentally friendly but also very beneficial for the body. Especially in the spring and summer, when there are long periods of dry weather, moving with such means of transport in cities is very time efficient.

Winter is coming: here are 3 things to keep in mind

The winter season is already here, but snow is not yet in sight, at least in the lowland Slovenia. Although the majority of Julian Alps, Vršič pass and other higher-altitude areas are already snow-covered, the weather is still quite sunny and fall-like. But be careful! The use of snow tires or snow chains is already mandatory.

What do we have to think about in relation to the coldest season and our vehicle? Here are three extremely important things:

Tire replacement: if you have not already replaced them, do not wait any longer. 4 winter M+S (mud and snow) tires with 3 mm profile are required, or a combination of 3 mm summer tires and snow chains.
Chains, shovel: although optional (if winter tires are already fitted), it is definitely worth it to have snow chains and shovel in the trunk, especially on days when it snows heavily. This will come in handy whenever we will need to shovel snow (you never know when you hit a snowstorm); on the other hand, the snow chains are designed to better grip tires on the road when winter tires no longer help. Before using the snow chains, be sure to try to attach them already at home, as it is often not easy to do so.
Careful on the road: driving on snowy or icy roads is not common at all. The driver should be more alert to other traffic users and adjust the speed to the road conditions. Before driving in snow conditions, it is essential to check the battery quality, wipers and lights.

Remember that in Slovenia, winter equipment (4 M+S winter tires, 3 mm profile, or summer tires, 3 mm profile, + chains) is mandatory from November 15 to March 15. All four-wheel drive is subject to the same rules; the chains must be on two permanently engaged drive wheels. Mandatory winter equipment is prescribed everywhere except in the coastal zone.

Mandatory winter equipment in neighbouring countries

Austria: winter equipment is mandatory from 1 November to 15 April. It consists of 4 winter tires (4 mm profile) or summer tires (4 mm profile) and chains on drive wheels. Attention: chains can only be on wheels when there is snow or ice on the roadway. In the case of snow mud, chains are not allowed, and summer tires are not allowed as well. In all higher-lying areas (marked), chains are also mandatory on winter tires.

Italy: winter equipment is compulsory from November 1 to April 15, in some places starting sooner or later. Winter tires and snow chains are required. On higher roads, snow chains are also required on winter tires (marked accordingly) in the event of heavy snowfall.

Hungary: the use of winter equipment in this country is not time-limited. In case of heavy snow on the road, it is mandatory to use chains on the drive wheels. The relevant authorities may require chains already when crossing the national border.

Croatia: winter equipment is compulsory between November 15 and April 15, regardless of driving conditions and whenever it snows. Mandatory winter gear includes 4 M+S winter or year-round tires, or a combination of 4 summer tires with a minimum 4 mm profile and snow chains on drive wheels.

How to drive safely during the storm

Have you ever experienced a strong summer storm with raging rain, numerous lightning strikes and reduced visibility? Since we are often on the road, we have been witnessing such bad driving conditions many times. We have written some ideas on how to deal better with riding in unfavourable circumstances in the following blog. Check it out!

Lately, we are increasingly witnessing severe storms, accompanied by heavy rain, wind, lightning, and even hail. In such circumstances, the driving visibility is restricted, there is increased rainfall on the road and other potential hazards. When the storm can not be avoided, always keep in mind the following:

the speed of the drive is adjusted to the conditions, mainly due to the amount of precipitation,
make sure that our vehicle is well visible, never forget to turn on the lights if they do not light up automatically,
if children or elderly people travel with us, let’s calm them down with appropriate, not too loud music or conversation,
if we have cruise control, turn it off,
strictly observe the safety distance,
there is a lot of rain on the windshield, so let’s speed it down, and more attention is paid to other road users, especially pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists,
During the storm, lightning is a normal phenomenon. Against this danger, we are in principle safe in the vehicle (the car works as the so-called Faraday cage).

During a storm, we never drive with open windows and a lowered roof, even if it sounds fun. Before driving, always consider whether our vehicle is handling well in a more complex situation. In the reservoir, we always have enough fuel and a mandatory first aid kit. If the rain is exceptionally strong and, the thick hail starts falling, and the visibility is zero, we stop at the first appropriate place, light all four indicators, and do not leave the car. Even before that, we safely use an app to check the radar image or to turn on the radio, where we can get basic information about current weather events.

Under any circumstances, we do not do this:

stop under overpasses, in tunnels and under trees (especially when it blows heavily),
never drive into a standing water, if we do not know how deep it is,
do not leave the vehicle unless this is absolutely essential.

In extreme circumstances, always call the information centre (112) and take care of the health and safety of us and the people and animals that are with us.

How safe is Slovenia for Travel?

Slovenia is partly an Alpine and partly a Mediterranean country, squeezed between Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia. The country gained independence in 1991, after a short 10-day independence war against the military forces of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. A small but export-oriented economy has advanced rapidly and has risen to its feet after the collapse of the system in the former Yugoslavia. In 2004, Slovenia joined the European Union and NATO, and later into the Schengen border area. In 2007, the Euro currency was adopted (back in the old days we used a currency called a “tolar”).

1. You need to be 21 years to rent a vehicle

Compulsory winter equipment in Slovenia

Between 15th November and 15th March, winter equipment is obligatory for all the vehicles in Slovenia, and in case of winter conditions, it is necessary already earlier. Compulsory equipment is used for better grip with the surface and for a safer driving. Continue reading and see what belongs to the category of winter equipment.

The situation on the road, as well as the Road Traffic Regulations Act, stipulate that all vehicles must be adequately equipped for winter conditions when they are on snowy or icy roads, regardless of the season. In the winter conditions, we are witnessing the situation, where the road or part of it is snowed or covered with layers of ice.

Otherwise, in Slovenia, it is necessary that vehicles of the categories M (1), N (1), L (5) e, L (6) e and L (7) must have adequate winter equipment from 15th November until 15th March of next year. Under this mandatory equipment, one must consider four winter tires M + S (of the 3 mm profile) or summer tires (of the 3 mm profile) and associated snow chains. The abbreviation M + S means “mud and snow”. In principle, at least experts suggest so, tires must be replaced every two years.

For all-wheel-drive vehicles (4×4), the same rules apply, and the snow chains must be put on two permanently engaged drive wheels (on at least one axle). Snow chains are used when larger amounts of snow are located on the driving surface and when the tire does not come into contact with the asphalt or concrete while driving (tire remains in a snow and leaves a trail behind).

The compulsory winter equipment rule applies to all climatic zones or all areas, except in the warmer coastal area (Slovenian Istria and areas below the apparent line between the Italian and Croatian border are excluded). It is also important to emphasize that in road transport, studded tires are not permitted – they are forbidden.

The Road Traffic Rules Act stipulates that vehicles must be equipped with winter equipment when they are on winter roads, regardless of the season. We must also have an appropriate shovel in the vehicle.

Driving in the rain should not be routine

Driving in the rain is not a normal ride. Statistics show that at that time, more accidents occur than in normal (dry) conditions. If not before, it gets clear when we look at the official numbers. For example, in the United States, as much as 950,000 road accidents occur in the rain due to wet roads, where about 4,700 people die and more than 384,000 people get injured.

In the rain, drivers tend to behave the same as when they drive in normal conditions. We drive out of habit, which is not good. Experts advise us to be cautious, constantly think about the situation on the road and adjust the speed of the drive to the conditions and the circumstances around us.

5 golden rules for driving in the rain:

Turn on the lights! For most drivers, this seems self-evident, but despite the fact that lights turn on automatically in most cases, there are still individuals who, in time of the reduced visibility, do not drive with the lights on. Such behaviour is extremely dangerous, especially due to other road users who can easily overlook the unilluminated vehicle.
Check wipers and tire quality. The first one has to function flawlessly and remove all excess fluid from the windshield enough to remove the view on the carriageway. The quality of tires is also crucial. We need to be careful about the profile, which must quickly drain large quantities of water, and its wear. Newer tires are better than older ones because they have a worn-out profile and are not persistent on the road surface.
Pay attention to larger amounts of water on the road. So-called aquaplaning or hydroplaning occurs when the vehicle enters a large puddle at a speed, and we lose control of the vehicle, and it can be fatal. The situation occurs because the tires do not keep up with the carriage, friction is greatly reduced or eliminated, and the vehicle starts slipping. For aquaplaning, just two millimetres of rain on the road and a speed of over 55 km / h is sufficient and we can already start losing control of the vehicle. If this does happen to us anyway, slowly lower the gas, do not overturn, and re-operate the steering wheel when we feel solid under the tires.
Turn off the cruise control. Although it seems that it helps us in driving through the difficult driving conditions, it is actually the opposite. If we have a cruise control turned on, in the case of aquaplaning, the vehicle will accelerate and exacerbate the situation.
Decrease speed! Speed limitations on road signs are valid in dry conditions. When it rains, visibility is very limited and the road surface is slippery. Prepare for a drive in the heat

We must surely have encountered something similar: The weathermen is predicting a new heat wave, but we need to travel by a car anyway (even longer distances). In order to stay focused while driving, we need to follow some basic guidelines. Advice might also be used by those who rent a car at Agio.si.

Tip number one: get some rest

Before a long ride, especially in the heat, let’s have a good refreshing sleep. Relax and clear, we tend to overcome periods with high heat much easier. We need to count on the fact that we’ll have to stop and visit the toilet in the meantime. Maybe the road will be crowded and we will get stuck in a traffic jam. All possible scenarios must be included in the travel time.

Check the vehicle and the amount of fuel

Before long driving, always check the vehicle’s operations (regardless of the outside temperature of the air) and prepare the relevant documents (driving license, traffic permit, green card, etc.). If the car is hot, cool it down first

It is easier to do it in the shade. Open the windows and doors of the vehicle. Start the car and turn on the ventilation system, set it to the lowest temperature. Direct the air flow to the slots of the windows, then turn on the air conditioning and close the car (including the windows).

Usage of the air condition

At first, the air conditioning system is set to a few degrees less than the outside temperature of the air. First, cool the air in the interior, and then let the outside air to the driving cabin. That is important due to oxygen and humidity control. Another useful advice: Stop the air condition before you reach your destination and let the ventilation work only. The air conditioning will dry up and we will have less problems with the accumulation of bacteria, unpleasant smell and even diseases.

Take a good look at the route to your destination

Before traveling, always check where you will drive and what are the local driving requirements (speed limit, vignette, …). Enough stops for refreshments, and also a backup plan should be put in the plan, most often in regional or local roads, where the speed is slower, but the trip is, nevertheless, more reliable.

Children?

Securely place them in child seats. Make sure they are dressed in suitable lightweight clothing and have sufficient fluid. Before sunshine, we can additionally protect them with a screen that is installed on a window glass. Never direct the flow of the cold air from the air conditioning system directly into them (this applies to all persons in the cabin of the vehicle).

Cold drinking water and cosy atmosphere

Consider taking with you enough appropriately chilled water or isotonic beverages. Always avoid milk and fizzy drinks, alcohol and driving do not fit anyway. Remove products that emit strong odors. Make sure that the car cabin is quiet, you can cut time by listening to some good music.
